Intro

Howdy, this is my first foray into putting stuff online, but I figured if there was anyone out there trying to do a similar project that I might be able to save them a bit of trouble.  One caveat, I am not a linux pro ... I have a computer science degree and am currently working in the telecom field, but I really have very little real world experience in programming.  So, I may not always have the best explanation for why something is done, but in general, through trial and error, I was able to bang on it until it worked : )  So, here it is ...

 Idea

Like most folks these days I have a ton of digital pictures sitting on my computer.  Every once in a while I open up my pictures folder and look at them, but most of the time they just sit there waiting for my hard drive to crash (I really should back them up...but thats another story).  Anyhow, I started looking into buying a digital frame and was mortified at the prices for a decent sized frame.  So, I began looking for less pricey alternatives and eventually decided I would find an old laptop and just build my own Digital Picture Frame (DPF) using linux.  After all, there are hundreds of sites out there that have instructions, and I have a computer science degree - how hard could it be?  So, very enthusiastically, I procured a laptop from ebay and began the adventure.
